Many of us were taught to track health using one simple number: body weight.
But weight alone tells us very little about what’s actually happening inside the body.

Two people can weigh exactly the same and have very different health profiles — different levels of body fat, muscle, hydration, and even inflammation. And this is where weight falls short as a measure of real health.


What I use instead

To understand what weight can’t tell us, I use body composition testing — a method that looks at how the body is actually structured and functioning.

By sending a very small, safe electrical signal through the body, we can distinguish between muscle, fat, and water, and build a much clearer picture of what’s happening beneath the surface — not just what the scales show.

This approach, known as Body Composition Analysis (BIA), provides practical, repeatable information that helps guide nutrition, training, and lifestyle decisions in a far more targeted way. Rather than relying on assumptions, it allows us to see whether changes in weight reflect real improvements in health — or whether something important is being missed.


Why quality — and consistency — matter

Not all body composition scans are created equal.

And that’s where the real value lies.


The importance of tracking change over time

A single scan can be interesting.
But repeating measurements allows us to observe trends, such as:

  • Whether weight changes are coming from fat, muscle, or other shifts

  • Gradual fat gain that may not show on the scales as muscle declines (very common after 40)

  • Silent loss of lean mass due to ageing, stress, under-eating, or over-training

  • Why progress may stall despite “doing all the right things”

This shifts the conversation from “What do I weigh?” to “What is my body actually adapting to?”


Muscle, fat, and common misconceptions

One of the most common things I hear in clinic is:
“I think the weight I’ve gained must be muscle.”

Sometimes that’s true — but often, it isn’t.

Building muscle requires very specific conditions: adequate protein, sufficient energy, appropriate resistance training, and recovery that matches an individual’s physiology and hormones. When advice isn’t well-matched, the result is often fat gain instead of muscle — or weight loss that comes at the expense of valuable lean tissue.

Body composition testing helps clarify this gently and objectively, removing guesswork and self-judgement.


Cellular health, inflammation and hormones

Advanced body composition equipment can also provide insight into cellular health — including how well the body is coping with inflammation, stress, and hormonal change.

These cellular patterns are influenced by factors such as inflammatory load, oxidative stress, recovery capacity, and life stress. This becomes especially relevant during the peri-menopausal years, when subtle inflammatory and body composition changes often occur long before major weight changes are visible — and similarly for men as they age, when gradual hormonal shifts and changes in muscle quality can affect metabolism, recovery, and overall resilience.

When interpreted in context, these trends help guide strategies that support cellular health and resilience — rather than simply chasing numbers on the scales.


Why this matters more with time

As we move through adulthood, body fat tends to increase and muscle mass tends to decline. This isn’t a personal failure — it’s biology.

The encouraging part is that these changes are not inevitable. They can often be slowed, interrupted, or even reversed — but only if we know what we’re actually working with.

You can’t manage what you’re not measuring.


A different way to think about progress

For many people, body composition testing becomes less about “fixing a problem” and more about understanding their body, making informed decisions, and catching small changes early.

Sometimes it confirms that what you’re doing is working.
Other times, it highlights where a small adjustment could make all the difference.

Either way, it replaces guesswork with clarity.
